FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREE Walking Netball Taster Sessions in May!

As part of National Walking Month in May Everybody Sport and Recreation is offering a range of FREE introductory taster sessions for anyone looking to get more active and join a local walking activity group.

Included in the taster sessions is the increasingly popular Walking Netball group which currently runs at Poynton Leisure Centre, Wilmslow Leisure Centre and Congleton Leisure Centre. We caught up with avid Poynton group member Liz Arrowsmith to find out how Walking Netball came to Cheshire and why it is becoming so popular for those people wanting to continue exercising or get back into exercise at a slower pace.

“As I am in my mid-70’s I was struggling to find a sociable activity that didn’t involve just meeting up for lunch. I have always tried to remain active and was inspired when I saw an advert for Walking Netball. The only problem was, there wasn’t any local groups I could attend to play. Being part of the U3A meant I had a good network of people to discuss the new sessions and I was advised to contact my local leisure centre as a venue. I got in touch with the Poynton Leisure Centre who agreed to help launch and run Walking Netball in the sports hall.”

The weekly Walking Netball sessions start off with some basic warm-up exercises followed by shooting practice and team games. The sessions are coached by Everybody Volunteers and Sports Coaches and cost £3 or free as an Everybody member.

Liz continued, “Since October the group has grown in numbers and now 18-20 of us meet every Tuesday morning 11-12pm followed by tea or coffee. It’s a wonderful way of getting some exercise with lots of fun, laughter and camaraderie. Most of us played netball at school, but this session is a much slower pace and perfect for anyone looking to get more active, at any age and ability.”
