In the heart of Cheshire, Holmes Chapel and Middlewich leisure centres have become vibrant hubs of activity and camaraderie, thanks to volunteer-led walking netball sessions. These inclusive sessions bring together people of all ages and abilities, encouraging a strong sense of community and well-being.

Every week, participants take part in walking netball, which includes fun games and match play, promoting positive physical and mental health. The sport’s inclusive nature ensures everyone can join, regardless of fitness level or mobility, providing a safe space for those who might have felt excluded from traditional sports. Many of the ladies hadn’t played netball since high school, but they found walking netball to be a welcoming and enjoyable way to reconnect with the sport.

Sue, Sue, and Angela met at a taster session organized by the Women’s Institute and England Netball at Middlewich. Inspired by their experience, the two Sues started a group in Holmes Chapel, while Angela began assisting in Middlewich. Samantha later joined to improve her fitness levels. When the Host moved away, Angela took over, and Samantha stepped up to help. They support each other’s sessions, enjoying the team spirit and the game.

“We try to make our sessions fun while being mindful of various abilities within the group,” says Angela. “We also provide opportunities to play other groups in friendly games and take part in festivals. Every few months, we arrange social events for a chance to dress up, chat, and laugh.”

The impact extends beyond the court. Friendships have blossomed, and a strong support network has emerged. Participants share stories of overcoming loneliness, building confidence, and finding joy in physical activity.

Georgia, England Netball Development Officer for the area, praises the dedicated walking netball hosts: “Their passion and commitment make a significant difference in the community. It’s fantastic to see enthusiastic volunteers running sessions in Middlewich and Holmes Chapel. Their hard work ensures walking netball continues to grow and remains accessible to all, regardless of age or ability.”

The volunteers, the true heroes of this initiative, bring passion and dedication to every session. Their commitment to creating a welcoming environment has not gone unnoticed.

Brónach, a walking netball participant, says: “You can go at a pace that suits you. It’s a sport for all. It’s relaxed but fun. Everyone celebrates a good goal, catch or interception regardless of the team. I’m new but have been made to feel very welcome.”

Our walking netball sessions are more than just a sport; they are a community where everyone is welcome, and friendships flourish. Many players hadn’t been on a netball court since high school, but they quickly found their stride and rediscovered their love for the game.
