Macclesfield & District Lions Club 30th Annual Charity Swimathon

Macclesfield & District Lions Club is organizing its 30th Annual Charity Swimathon on Sunday, 13th November, 2016 at Macclesfield Leisure Centre. 

Arthur Clenton is the organizer and this will be the 30th annual one he has organized having initiated the event for Macclesfield Lions in 1987.

Over the years the event has raised over £140,000 with the main recipients being BBC Children in Need, Middlewood Riding for the Disabled and Lions charitable causes.

Team categories are Primary School Age, Year 7, Under 19, Mixed and Adults. Each team has 6 swimmers swimming in relay a lap (two lengths of the pool) and   each team swims for 45 minutes.

There is the National Westminster Bank PLC cup for the team swimming the most laps and the Lions Trophy for the organisation raising the most sponsorship money.

Since 1987 Macclesfield & District Lions have raised £20,000 approx.a year for good causes locally, nationally and internationally and in the last financial year of 2015-2016 some 40 grants were made with the  main recipients  being BBC Children in Need, Middlewood RDA., East Cheshire Hospice, Bosley Disaster Appeal, Girl Guiding Bollington, Mary Sunley Canal Boat Charity and Lions Youth Brass. There were numerous other recipients and regular support given to the Bridgend Centre, Bollington and a contribution made to Prestbury Youth Club.

In the previous year, help was given to two schools in Bollington to purchase defibrillators and a substantial donation made to Prestbury Park Playground.
