Good Boost: as effective as traditional physio?

What if getting back to movement didn’t have to feel clinical? What if it could feel supportive, social, and maybe even enjoyable?

Recent research has found that Good Boost can be as effective as traditional physiotherapy for people with joint pain and musculoskeletal conditions. That’s a big step forward. Because it means more people can access the help they need, in a way that feels more like everyday life.

So, what is Good Boost? If you’re new to it, Good Boost is a pool-based rehabilitation programme designed to help you move more easily and with less pain.

Sessions take place in warm water, where buoyancy supports your body and reduces strain on joints. Using smart technology, each programme is tailored to you. So you’re not trying to keep up with anyone else. You’re simply working at your own pace.

You’ll find:

  • Guided sessions with friendly, qualified instructors
  • Personalised exercises adapted to your ability
  • A relaxed, welcoming space where everyone can join in

It’s low impact, easy to follow, and most importantly, it’s built around helping you feel more confident in your movement.

Over the past year, 6,408 led sessions have been delivered, supporting 5,776 attendances across the Good Boost programme. Of those, 4,528 attendances were at instructor-led classes, alongside 1,248 attendances through self-guided tablet sessions, giving people greater flexibility in how they take part.

Researchers from the University of Exeter, working alongside the Global Social Prescribing Alliance, have explored how community-based programmes like Good Boost can support people with ongoing pain conditions.

Their findings show that structured, water-based sessions can deliver real results. Helping people improve mobility, reduce discomfort and stay consistent with exercise over time.

Because for many people, the challenge isn’t just starting. It’s sticking with something that feels manageable, safe and sustainable.

This is particularly important, given that 72% of participants reported living with multiple health conditions when starting the programme. Despite these challenges, 68% reported an improvement in their condition after taking part.

Good Boost helps bridge that gap. Offering a practical, proven option that complements traditional care, while being easier to access and fit into daily life.

Every session represents someone choosing to move a little more, build confidence, and take an active role in their health. And with thousands of attendances recorded across the year, it’s clear that Good Boost is helping people find an approach to exercise that feels achievable, supportive and sustainable.

Participants had an average age of 67 years, demonstrating the programme’s value in helping older adults stay active, independent and engaged in regular movement.

“It’s helped enormously with my movement and just lack of pain which I had before, especially the back pain. It’s a really good way of exercising without putting too much strain on yourself and it’s really enjoyable.” – Mandy

“The first time I came I was on two crutches, and now I don’t need my crutches! – Ken.

“I’m so pleased I have joined the programme. I have experienced an injury and have been having therapy on a weekly basis. I have been told to exercise and to keep moving. I have found the programme extremely beneficial. I am experiencing very little pain now which is fantastic. I have had lower back pain and sciatica in both legs. I am no longer taking painkillers and feel fantastic when I leave the pool.” – Janet.

If you’ve been living with stiffness, pain or reduced mobility, it’s easy to feel like you’re running out of options. But support doesn’t always have to look the same.

Sometimes, it starts with something simple. Moving a little more, feeling a little better, and building confidence step by step.

That’s where Good Boost comes in. It gives you a place to start, with guidance, structure and support around you.

One of the best things about starting with Good Boost is where it can lead next. At Everybody, there are plenty of ways to build on your progress:
