Alsager Leisure Centre Opens New Fitness Suite

Alsager Swimmer Olivia Cork and GB Athlete Rowan Cheshire open new Alsager Leisure Centre Fitness Suite to Everybody Leisure gym members

 

On Thursday 22nd January 2015, Alsager Leisure Centre held an opening evening for loyal customers and partners to have an exclusive look inside the newly refurbished fitness suite. Although open to customers since December 10th 2014, this official opening showcased the support and dedication of members and local athletes from the area to the community leisure centre and the investment from the new Everybody Trust to improve the service.

Over 50 of Alsager Leisure Centre’s customers and partners were in attendance and were welcomed with a champagne reception and Everybody goody bags.

Graham Middleton, Centre Manager for Alsager Leisure Centre opened the evening with a brief history of the centre as he was surrounded by before and after pictures to show the recent gym transformation.

Thanks were given to members for their loyalty to the facility and to the Everybody Trust for the £75,000 investment which has strengthened the service offering and given the centre a gym to be proud of. Cheshire East Council also contributed with the refurbishment of the floors and decoration of the suite.

The new fitness suite comprises of top of the range Matrix cardiovascular and strength equipment.

Graham commented, ‘This refurbishment has been a long time coming and we cannot thank those involved enough for making our customers dreams come true by providing a gym with top of the range Matrix equipment in a bright and modern setting. We look forward to welcoming new and existing customers into the fitness suite and help them achieve their fitness goals.’

The gym was officially opened by the inspirational Olivia Cork a committed member of Everybody Leisure and a regular user of the swimming pool and gym at Alsager Leisure Centre. Olivia was also accompanied by Team GB athlete Rowan Cheshire who is also part of the Athlete Performance Academy ran by the Everybody Leisure Development Team.

Christopher Garton, Fitness Advisor at Alsager who has witnessed first hand the dedication Olivia has to her training, presented her with a gift of a Year’s Free Everybody Membership as a thank you to the support she has given to centre. Olivia will now be able to use all 15 of the Everybody Leisure Centres in Cheshire East include the swimming pools, gyms and fitness classes.

Both Olivia and Rowan addressed attendees to the event telling stories of their recent training and achievements as local sporting heroes before cutting the ribbon in the new fitness suite.

Olivia Cork lost her leg to bone cancer at 14, but three years on is making great acheivements as a swimmer, looking to compete at international level this year. She trains with Bridgestone Swimming Club at Alsager Leisure Centre for over 13 hours per week.

Olivia has supported Cancer Research UK’s campaign We Will Beat Cancer Sooner along with appearing in Macmillan Cancer Support’s most recent cancer story videos which was shot at Alsager Leisure Centre.

Rowan Cheshire

Rowan Cheshire, 19 from Alsager,  is a British freestyle skier, specialising in the halfpipe. She won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Valmalenco. In January 2014 she became the first British female skier to win a halfpipe competition on the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup when she took the halfpipe event at a meeting in Calgary. This was the first Freestyle World Cup win for a British female skier since Jilly Curry won an aerials competition in 1992.

She was competing at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, during which she was knocked unconscious whilst in training and is now hoping to compete later in the year for the 2015 winter games.
