Alex Puchalski – Aspiring Duty Manager Pathway
My story with Everybody Swim started at 6 months old when I went for my first swimming lesson at Macclesfield Leisure Centre. I followed our Learn To Swim Scheme all the way to stage 7, progressing on to do both Swim Fit and Rookie Lifeguard.
When I turned 16 I immediately did my Level 1 Teaching Assistant qualification. Following this I kept trying to develop my skill set so 6 months later I completed my NPLQ and qualified as a Lifeguard. This introduced me to working in all aspects of the building from lifeguarding and cleaning to setting up for classes and activities.
3 months later I began my Level 2 Swimming Teaching. I went from assisting other teachers, to teaching my own lessons, learning from other swim teachers’ different games, ideas, and tricks to make my lessons as amazing as possible.
Upon completion of my A-Levels I talked to other members of staff in other parts of the building, developing my knowledge of what goes on in the gym and set up processes in the gym, being trained up as a receptionist and a cleaner.
Not long after, I became Macclesfield Leisure Centre’s full-time swim teacher. This involves a variety of work, from admin and mentoring new swim teachers to booking people into lessons, and overseeing both our Adult and Alpha schemes.
I am currently on the Aspiring Duty Manager pathway, completing relevant courses, shadowing Duty Manager’s and learning how to effectively run the day-to-day activities of a leisure centre.
