Return to exercise class the saving grace for Holmes Chapel resident

By Laura Ratcliffe December 8, 2020

John Snell, 77, from Holmes Chapel, has been a member at Everybody Sport and Recreation for well over 4 years, and attends classes at Holmes Chapel Community Centre, Crewe Lifestyle Centre, and Congleton Leisure Centre on a weekly basis. Being older, he commented how important it was for him to keep fit and how much he loved the social side of having an Everybody membership!

John started attending classes as he felt lonely and was adjusting to a new life, he knew he needed some socialisation, and attending classes was his saving grace for the last few years. He commented, “attending the classes gave me a new lease of life, and now I can’t imagine how I would be without them! I’m so grateful to the team and their support.”

During the first national lockdown, John struggled with loneliness and missed the socialisation that came along with attending classes and visiting different leisure centres. When he heard the news that his Move it or Lose it class was starting again, he was elated and “chomping at the bit” to return!

Although slightly nervous about returning, he knew that for his physical and mental health it was the best thing for him! He travelled to Crewe to attend the classes and was immediately glad, he said the safety he felt when he walked in made him feel at ease immediately. He was so happy to be back in a social setting, and loved chatting with instructor Tracy, he felt better straight away and knew he would be returning as soon as he could.

John commented about how much he had missed the socialisation that came along with attending the classes, it gives him the get up and go that he so badly needs! During lockdown it was difficult for him to find motivation, but the classes have renewed his “zest for life”.

He attended classes regularly again and loved being back! He wants people to know that nothing should stop you! It’s the perfect place to have a chat and see new faces safely. It’s allowed him to form friendships and supported him in combatting his loneliness which he is so grateful for.

Catching up with John following the second national lockdown, he stated again how much he had missed the classes! John is now waiting to receive a vaccine so he can return to his favourite classes and commented “I miss everything! Patience is a virtue and my wait is on.” He is ready to return and can’t wait for 2021, he says it’s going to be his best year yet. John wants everyone to know how great the classes are, and if you’re hesitating about attending, don’t! Just don’t take his space!
