Drowning Prevention Week 2022
Drowning is preventable, yet over 400 lives are lost to drowning across the UK and Ireland, every year. Water safety education is vital and, in some instances, could be a child’s only opportunity to learn about the water. Source: https://www.rlss.org.uk/Pages/Category/water-safety-education
Drowning Prevention Week will take place between Saturday 18th- Saturday 25th June, at Everybody Health and Leisure our swimmers safety is paramount, here we will be sharing what we will be doing during Drowning Prevention Week at our leisure centre’s and how you can help keep our community safe in the water by becoming a Lifeguard or teaching a vital life skill by becoming a Swimming Teacher!
Be sure to check out our careers page for roles at Everybody and how we can help you if you are not yet qualified, more information below.
Now in its ninth year, DPW 2022 is a crucial campaign. Still on the recovery from COVID, millions of young people have vitally missed out on the opportunity to swim, leaving a dramatic gap in school swimming and water safety education and many families are still opting to holiday around UK and Irish waters. During Drowning Prevention week all of our school swimming lessons will be based around water safety and our Learn To Swim Scheme swimming lessons will incorporate 10 minutes of water safety at the end of each class, all children who attend lessons this week will receive a certificate.
These sessions could include teaching children:
- Safe Entry and Exit (Slide-in Entry, Fall-in Entry + Climb Out)
- Staying at the Surface (Floating on your back and sculling + Treading water)
- Staying Safe during an Emergency (Shout and Signal Rescue + Throwing Rescue)
Abbie Thorburn, Master Aquatic Lead at Everybody Health & Leisure shares
“We are supporting the RLSS campaign, Drowning Prevention Week throughout June. We will be targeting school swimming lessons and our learn to swim scheme to create awareness of the dangers around water in a fun and engaging way. We hope to raise awareness and allow children and families to enjoy water safely, especially during the summer when we know families are around water more frequently. Check out our social media channels to see what we get up to.”
