Rebuilding Confidence One Length at a Time: Aoibhe’s Journey

Having started swimming at the Alsager leisure centre at around four years old, Aoibhe has spent nearly a decade building her confidence in the water, something that would later become vital in ways she never expected.

Swimming has always been a big part of Aoibhe’s life. Inspired by family, including a grandad who was a keen swimmer, she began lessons early, recognising swimming as an essential life skill. Over the years, the pool at Everybody Health & Leisure in Alsager became her main space for activity, regularly attending Swim Fit sessions before her accident.

Everything changed following a serious horse-riding accident, when Aoibhe fell head-first towards a wall while cantering. The severity of her injuries meant she was airlifted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, where she was treated for a fractured skull after being knocked unconscious. She then faced three to four months of recovery, followed by ongoing physical and emotional challenges, including being unable to walk independently and relying on a specialist chair for everyday tasks.

With her mobility affected and daily life requiring support, Aoibhe turned to something familiar, the pool, to begin rebuilding her strength, balance and confidence, one length at a time.

Despite these challenges, Aoibhe was determined. Returning to the pool marked a turning point in her recovery journey. Initially unable to swim a single length, she has since worked her way up to swimming 60 lengths, a powerful reflection of her resilience and commitment. Where she once needed a wheelchair aid to access the water, she can now walk down the steps independently.

While she acknowledges she hasn’t yet regained all the skills she had before, Aoibhe is improving with every session, consistently pushing herself forward and steadily rebuilding her strength, balance and confidence.

The benefits haven’t just been physical. Swimming has played a vital role in supporting Aoibhe’s mental health, giving her a positive focus and a sense of purpose during recovery.

Beyond the pool, Aoibhe is gradually returning to the things she loves. She’s back at the stables, helping with the horses by cleaning and feeding, and is an active member of the Pony Club, where she supports younger children in learning how to care for horses. After missing twelve months of school, she’s also returned to full-time education this term with support.

Looking ahead, Aoibhe has clear ambitions. She hopes to work with horses one day and is also interested in giving back through Everybody Health & Leisure by volunteering with the swim team and training as a swimming instructor, helping others in the same way swimming has helped her.

Aoibhe is also taking on a meaningful fundraising challenge. Between 21st and 28th June, alongside 2493 Squadron, her dad Chris, Shaun Rhodes and other squadron staff will walk Hadrian’s Wall coast to coast, from South Shields to Bowness-on-Solway, while Aoibhe completes the challenge virtually with her cadets. She is raising funds for HTS apparatus (Hygiene and Toileting System), a specialist chair that supported her dignity and independence during recovery, helping ensure others can access the same vital equipment.

Aoibhe’s journey is a powerful reminder that progress doesn’t happen overnight, but with determination, support and the right environment, incredible milestones can be achieved.

As she continues to regain her strength and confidence, Aoibhe is focused on building her future, whether that’s returning to riding, working with horses, or inspiring others through swimming.

For anyone facing similar challenges, Everybody Health & Leisure offers a wide range of supportive services designed to help you move at your own pace.
