Walking Netball is all about connection, community and trying something a little different. We have a brilliant example of how people can sometimes feel limited to their own sessions, seeing familiar faces at tournaments, but not always having the chance to properly connect, socialise or play alongside one another. That’s exactly where The Great Big Walking Netball Session came in.
Organised by the sports team, The Great Big Walking Netball Session brought together a fantastic mix of players from different walking netball sessions. The aim was simple: help people connect, have fun and enjoy something a little different, and it delivered on all fronts.
Many of the players had known each other for years. They’d often met on court at tournaments but had never had the chance to play on the same team or spend time socialising together. This session gave them that opportunity and it didn’t disappoint.
The day was packed with light-hearted games, team activities and friendly match play. Players were mixed across groups, supported one another throughout and created a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere from start to finish. There was plenty of laughter, lots of encouragement and just the right amount of friendly competitiveness thrown in.
As England Netball celebrates its centenary as the national governing body for the sport, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on how far netball has come and the communities it continues to build today. Events like The Great Big Walking Netball Session are a perfect example of how the sport has evolved to become more inclusive, accessible and focused on connection at every stage of life. From its early beginnings to a nationwide network of players, volunteers and clubs, this milestone highlights the lasting impact netball has had, and continues to have, in bringing people together.
One of the standout moments? Seeing familiar faces working together instead of against each other. It was a real reminder of how powerful sport can be when it comes to building new connections and strengthening friendships.
The day wrapped up in the best possible way, with everyone coming together for a well-earned cup of tea, some cake and a good chat.
Overall, it was a brilliant, feel-good day that celebrated not just walking netball, but the strong sense of community and friendship it creates.
Looking ahead, sessions like this show just how valuable it is to bring people together beyond their regular routines. Whether it’s more large-scale events, social sessions or mixed-team activities, there are plenty of opportunities to keep building those connections and making every visit even more enjoyable.
