Crewe Flyers take their first dive at new Crewe Lifestyle Centre
Crewe Flyers Swimming Club has taken its first training session at the new Crewe Lifestyle Centre with new Head Coach, Chris Pugh. The club has been waiting in anticipation to access the brand new state of the art swimming pool which is set to help them improve swimmers ability and grow their current membership.
The new Crewe Lifestyle Centre opened on 1st April, a £15m facility housing a range of community and leisure facilities in which Cheshire East Council states is the first of its kind in the region. Significant investment has been put into the new 25m, 8 lane swimming pool which caters for the public and competitive swimming clubs including Crewe Flyers and the Seahorse Swimming Club.
Crewe Flyers were invited to be the first swimmers into the pool on 21st March, holding their usual training session in the brand new facilities.
Talking to Everybody Sport and Recreation at the new Lifestyle Centre, both Head Coach and club captains were pleased with their new surroundings.
Chris Pugh, Head Coach commented, “I’m astonished with how its all turned out, I came here in September when it was still a building site, I couldn’t tell much about it, but coming here today I’m really impressed with how things are looking, the whole site looks brilliant.” Chris went on to say, “having a facility like this I can see us going from strength to strength.”

The club captains could not wait to enter the pool to train, with swimmers commenting they felt they could achieve personal bests due to the new lane ropes reducing drag on the water and the investment into the new starting blocks.
“It’s an honor to be here as the first people to swim in the pool. It’s all we have talked about for months now, it’s been exciting.” Commented Zack, Club Captain
Joe, Vice Captain continued, “It’s been quite a hot topic, everyone has wanted to see what it’s like and feel what it’s like to swim in the pool, it’s been quite interesting and exciting to look forward to.”

Crewe Flyers will be training in the pool from as early as 6am in the morning whilst also taking advantage of the new 100 station fitness suite and classes to help get their swimmers in the best shape for competitions.
The club has also recently signed the new club use agreement with Everybody Sport and Recreation, which allows them to grow their competitive swimming membership by attracting swimmers in Crewe and surrounding areas, identifying new talent within the Everybody swim scheme and getting reduced hire rates to their new training facility.
Nikki Stather, Crewe Flyer Club Chair commented on the benefits of the new agreement and the new swimming facilities, “At the moment we have around 100 swimmers but we are looking to grow that by 25% within the pool setting. I think just having this pool right in the centre of the town, it’s more accessible it’s just going to bring on more swimmers. We have a very good club at the minute, we are doing really well and we are successful and having this new pool will only enhance that.”
Nikki continued, “the 8 lane pool allows us to have more swimmers at the sessions. Previously we didn’t have any morning swims so we are now going to have these times in the week and at weekends which is massive for us to train our swimmers and our new coach is very pleased with this news. We have always had a good relationship with Everybody, but being given some choices at the new Lifestyle Centre and having some great discussions with Richard (Centre Manager) and his team has been great. We are just going to keep getting bigger and better and be the talk of the town!”
