From An Everybody Apprentice to A Full Time Lifeguard

By Matthew Shannon January 19, 2022

Everybody Sport and Recreation, Health and Wellbeing Charity based in Cheshire East have just launched applications for their 2022 apprenticeship opportunities. Including Community Activator Coach Level 2, Leisure Team Member Level 2 and Marketing Assistant Level 3.

Everybody caught up with Ryan Dutton, 22, who completed his Level 2 Leisure Team Member Apprenticeship at Nantwich Leisure Centre with Everybody Sport and Recreation.

(Ryan Dutton)

He started the apprenticeship in October 2019 and successfully received a distinction in October 2020, which was a great achievement for Ryan both personally and practically for his career. Ryan has now been working at the Crewe Lifestyle Centre since November 2020, as a full time Lifeguard.

Ryan knew what he wanted to do as soon as he left college, which led him to come across the Leisure Team Member apprenticeship opportunity when he visited the Crewe Lifestyle Centre to join the gym. He was attracted to the apprenticeship because it offered a great amount of the skills and qualifications, to enable him to progress in the future.

After applying, Ryan was invited for an interview at Holmes Chapel Community Centre for the role of, Level 2 Leisure Team Member apprenticeship.

Ryan mentioned he found the interview process quite formal, which he liked as it showed him it was going to be a well-recognised apprenticeship. When he was told he had been successful and would be taken on at the Nantwich site, Ryan was very happy to say the least.

During his apprenticeship, Ryan completed his swim teaching courses from Level 1, all the way up to teaching adults. Ryan gained experience on reception, which involved membership signs ups, greeting customers and all aspects of customer service. All this allowed him to gain valuable skills that he would later be using, in his current full time Lifeguard role.

Since Ryan moved to Crewe Lifestyle Centre in November 2020, he successfully became a full time lifeguard and gave us an insight into what his day to day activities included now, compared to his apprenticeship. He shared,

“I carried out my First Aid course which was called, ‘First Aid at Work’, allowing me to support customers when they need it. I get involved with all the equipment for the swimming pool, including setting up the lane ropes for different types of swims, I’m responsible for the controlled cleaning and general centre hygiene.”

Ryan won customer hero 2020 which he was shocked, yet very proud about. This was a fantastic achievement as Ryan hadn’t even finished his apprenticeship and he was already winning awards, which gave him a big confidence boost.

Ryan was also nominated for, ‘Employee of the Year’, for being excellent at site hygiene and always being approachable with customers.

He felt blown away by getting a nomination, as he thought he was just doing his job. Ryan was very happy with why he was nominated and proved to him if you work hard, you get the rewards.

When asked what Ryan currently liked about his full time job role he shared,

“No two days are the same. The variety that has come from moving sites to Crewe Lifestyle Centre has enabled me to move forward in my current role by being proactive and always looking to see what else I can do to improve.”

Ryan shared he would recommend an apprenticeship with Everybody, as the training and skills you gain will help you to progress up the career ladder, in whatever your chosen interest. Looking ahead in Ryan’s career he wants to be a Duty Manager one day. He felt that his Leisure Team Member apprenticeship allowed him to work his way up to where he is now and provided him with lots of industry experience.
