Let’s be honest: walking into a gym for the first can feel a little intimidating – especially when you’re not sure where to start. That’s exactly why we hosted our women’s gym introduction event. We wanted to create a space where women could experience the gym, with the trusted support of some of our awesome female PT’s. Spoiler alert: it was amazing.
On Wednesday 26th March, we laid mats, brought the snacks and welcomed a group of women into Crewe Lifestyle Centre for a gym introduction; created just for women, by women. We worked together with our friends at Active Her and welcomed a group of women ranging from ages 13 to 66; some attended on their own, whilst others accompanied daughters, friends and colleagues.
The event was designed for women new to the gym or returning to exercise after some time away. We had an evening packed with taster classes and a gym tour with a focus on boosting our endorphins whilst breaking down those barriers.
Studio Session
Following a brief warm introduction to a group of new and familiar faces to the centre, the first group took part in a movement session with PT Sam Rose. Some of our attendees had shared that they often come to the facility, but to accompany their children to swim lessons. Sam said that she ‘hated PE in school and only found my own love for fitness once I became a mother and was looking for some “me time”’ – something we all find ourselves in need of. Sam’s taster class brought tranquillity and calm to the event, with stretches, yoga poses and serene music.
TRAIN Taster
Meanwhile, upstairs in the gym our second group traded tranquillity for TRAIN with our PT Amy Stonehewer. Amy drove the group through a mini-TRAIN class; a HIIT-style session consisting of lifting, throwing, crunching and everything in between to get your heart racing. Amy then gave attendees a tour of the gym, showing them around the space amongst the Wednesday evening workouts that were taking place. Some attendees shared their usual routine in the gym doesn’t go beyond the treadmill. We hope by giving them a chance to explore, they’ll come back and take up more space on the gym floor.
Our groups swapped places, so everyone got chance to experience the peace of Sam’s session and the power of TRAIN with Amy, before we gathered back together – sore and smiling – to a talk from Bex in our health team about our One You programmes. Our ladies left, with goodie bags in hand, after an evening making themselves acquainted with our facilities with a helping hand from Sam and Amy.
