Bikeability is ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st century, designed to give children the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. During April 2020- March 2021 we have trained 2,500 children to cycle safely.
There are three Bikeability levels, with each level designed to help improve cycling skills, no matter what the cyclist knows already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees on a journey from the basics of balance and control, all the way through to planning and making a journey by themselves on busier roads.
Before setting off make sure to do a ABC bike check
A = Air – squeeze the tyres to ensure they are solid like an apple and not like squishy like a banana.
B = Brakes – Roll the bike forward and apply the front brakes. It should stop quickly. Roll the bike backwards to check the rear brakes.
C = Chain – lift up the rear of the bike and rotate the pedal to ensure the chain runs smoothly.
