Cycle Training (Bikeability) at Everybody Sport

About Everybody Cycling Training

Bikeability is ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st century, designed to give children the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.

We have trained over 5,600 children to cycle safely and  after securing a further £600,000 in Department for Transport grants we can continue this vital and successful cycling scheme to 2020!

There are three Bikeability levels, with each level designed to help improve cycling skills, no matter what the cyclist knows already.  Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees on a journey from the basics of balance and control, all the way through to planning and making a journey by themselves on busier roads.

Top tips to keep you safe

  • Plan your route and where you are going, how long it will take.
  • Check clothing is suitable and prepared for weather. Wear bright colour clothing if you don’t own a high-vis jacket.
  • Ensure helmet is tightly fitted but still have room to fit two fingers under the chin. Should be able to fit two fingers from eyebrow to bottom of helmet.
  • When riding at night you must have white front and red rear lights, a red rear reflector, and amber pedal reflectors.
  • Do not wear headphones when riding your bike.

Before setting off make sure to do a ABC bike check

A = Air – squeeze the tyres to ensure they are solid like an apple and not like squishy like a banana.

B = Brakes – Roll the bike forward and apply the front brakes. It should stop quickly. Roll the bike backwards to check the rear brakes.

C = Chain – lift up the rear of the bike and rotate the pedal to ensure the chain runs smoothly.
