During Monday 20th to Friday 25th June, athletes from the Everybody Talented Athlete Scheme visited various primary and secondary schools across Cheshire East to inspire pupils during National School Sport Week ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio.

The Everybody Talented Athlete Scheme is designed to support individuals from Cheshire East who are training and competing in sport at regional, national and international level.

National School Sport Week is a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people to be more active and take part in more PE and school sport. The Everybody Athletes supported this by presenting their experiences to pupils, in some cases deliver practical sessions, giving hints and tips, presenting trophies and medals during sports days, and encouraging pupils to keep active.

“It was a great experience for our children to be able to ask an experienced athlete questions about their sport. The children certainly enjoyed the session.” Jacqui Wild, Gorsey Bank Primary School.

“It was fantastic to have local athletes at the Crewe and Nantwich Primary School Town Sports who were great role models that the children could look up to” Niall McGregor, Crewe & Nantwich School Sport Partnership.

Athletes covered a range of sports and levels including National Netball, National Windsurfing, National Rugby, football, 200m running, swimming and basketball. Sarah Jackson (National Windsurfer) and Ruka Shonibare (Runner) and twins India and Georgie Perris-Redding (England U18’s Touch Rugby) were among the athletes encouraging children to take part in sport.

“It was great for local athletes to encourage young people to play sport and tell their story. Our athletes work hard to become some of the best in the country and some compete on an international level, for school children they are an inspiration and we are proud to be able to help them achieve their goals.” Keith Rogers, Club and Talent Lead at Everybody Sport and Recreation
