When observing Gail Brereton, her infectious laugh, outgoing personality and comforting smile, you’d never have known the difficulties she had faced, suffering with depression, coping with loss and feeling negative about her life. This is how she felt before she started exercising at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
Life had gotten on top of Gail, she was extremely low and suffering with depression, she has Arthritis and felt she was constantly taking a heap of tablets a day. She visited her doctor who advised she begin exercising, referring her to the ESCAPE-pain course, ran by Everybody Sport and Recreation.
ESCAPE-pain is a funded, 6 week, evidenced based rehabilitation programme, designed to reduce pain and disability for people with chronic joint pain or Osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip. In the 6 week funded course you will receive information, advice and support from Everybody Sport and Recreation’s qualified ESCAPE-pain Instructor’s to help better manage your chronic joint pain and lead a more active life.
She was reluctant and nervous about going to the class but decided to take the plunge and sign up.
Before walking into the class, Gail automatically felt overwhelmed and nervous; worried she’d not be able to do the exercises and would make a fool of herself in front of people she’d never met before. All of her worries were put to rest when she met Specialist Health Advisor Gavin, who immediately made her feel comfortable, assuring her that she can take it at her own pace, and she should be proud she made the decision to come.
Gavin made her feel comfortable and re-iterated the fact that she didn’t have to commit, she could come in and see the session and then decide.
Turns out Gail loved each and every minute of her ESCAPE-pain class! There was a great group of people in the session, which Gail is still friends with now! She praised the personal package you receive from the coaches at Crewe Lifestyle Centre and loved that she could do things at her own pace.
Her pain reduced, she felt more positive and is no longer taking anti-depressants. She now attends the follow on ESCAPE-pain classes, Move it or Lose it and Aqua fit! Exercising is now one of her main priorities and something she looks forward to – attending at least 5 times a week!
When asked what she’d say to someone thinking of completing ESCAPE-pain she said “Give it a try, you will feel comfortable, at ease and most importantly you’ll have fun, I’ve made some amazing friends, and a true friend in the instructors here at Crewe. You will feel instantly proud of yourself, and your confidence will improve over time.”
ESCAPE-pain can make a real difference to people’s lives in a range of ways. If you are aged over 55 years, have knee and/or hip pain for more than 3 months, independently mobile and able to carry out regular exercise and committed to taking part in 2 classes per week over 6 weeks and returning for a final session on week 12 then you are eligible to receive this funded course, for more information and to sign up please contact Everybody Healthy on email: [email protected], phone: 01270 685589 or visit www.everybody.org.uk
